Philippines prepares to submit extradition request for cult leader Apollo Quiboloy
Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida announced that the Philippines will soon file a petition to extradite Apollo Quiboloy to the United States on sex-trafficking and racketeering charges.
At a press briefing, Justice Secretary Fredderick Vida confirmed that the Department of Justice is about to file a formal extradition petition for Apollo Quiboloy, the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, to the United States. The request follows a U.S. demand made in August, accusing Quiboloy of sex-trafficking and racketeering. Vida emphasized that the Philippines will comply with its treaty obligations and adhere to Supreme Court extradition rules.
Chief State Counsel Dennis Chan previously expressed confidence that the petition would meet treaty requirements. Quiboloy remains incarcerated at Pasig City Jail while facing a non-bailable human-trafficking charge and additional child-protection violations. The filing will be submitted to a local trial court as the next procedural step.
Why it matters
The extradition move could lead to a high-profile trial of a powerful religious leader on serious international crimes.
