Pilbara children’s poverty testimonies delivered to Canberra urging national action
Children from South Hedland recorded their experiences of poverty, and the recordings were presented to federal ministers in Canberra.
In the Pilbara’s South Hedland, a group of children shared personal accounts of overcrowded homes, insufficient food, lack of cooling and safety worries. The Valuing Children Initiative’s End Child Poverty campaign, in partnership with the Youth Involvement Council, recorded these testimonies on a phone and delivered them to federal ministers and members of parliament in Canberra. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows South Hedland’s SEIFA score trails the broader Port Hedland area, underscoring local disadvantage despite the region’s massive iron-ore export revenue.
Campaign leaders and the WA Commissioner for Children urged the federal government to adopt a clear, legislated national strategy that includes child-centred poverty indicators. A Department of Social Services spokesperson said existing programs aim to improve wellbeing in remote areas, while local advocates called on decision-makers to visit the community and listen directly to the children.
