Pilotless Crop-Dusters Take Flight in California, Paving Way for Autonomous Aviation

Over an alfalfa field in California’s San Joaquin Valley, a small, fully electric crop-spraying aircraft without a cockpit flew at a dangerously low altitude, a maneuver its test engineer says would be impossible for a human pilot. Built by start-up Pyka, the plane autonomously plans its spray path, avoids mapped obstacles, lands for a manual refill and battery swap, then resumes precisely where it left off, demonstrating efficiency gains from reduced spray drift.

Pyka already operates about a dozen units in Brazil and plans to increase annual production to 1,000 by 2030, pricing each at $550,000. Company leaders envision future passenger fleets, while competitors like Reliable Robotics retrofit existing cargo planes and Merlin Labs apply AI-centric perception to larger military transports. Safety concerns persist, with pilot unions warning of risks and regulators requiring a visual observer for current operations. Nonetheless, military interest and the promise of addressing pilot shortages keep the technology in the spotlight.
