Pingyao Film Festival Celebrates a Decade with September Showcase and New Awards

The Pingyao International Film Festival will hold its 10th edition from Sept. 24-30 in Shanxi, featuring competition sections and cash-prize awards.

The Pingyao International Film Festival marks its tenth anniversary with a week-long run from Sept. 24 to 30 at the Pingyao Festival Palace in Shanxi Province. Established in 2017 by Jia Zhangke, the event comprises four pillars: Screening, Market, Cultivation and Academics. Its competition slate includes Crouching Tigers for emerging directors and Hidden Dragons for Chinese-language creators, both vying for the Roberto Rossellini and Fei Mu Awards.

The Fei Mu Best Film prize carries a cash reward of RMB 1 million, while Best Director receives RMB 200,000. Past festivals have highlighted early works by Chloé Zhao, Wei Shujun and Liu Jian. In related news, India’s Madhya Pradesh will launch its own People’s International Film Festival of India in December, and Singapore will host a three-day tribute to classic Taiwanese-language cinema.
