Pitso Mosimane takes charge of South Africa ahead of upcoming AFCON qualifier
Pitso Mosimane was officially confirmed as South Africa's head coach, giving him just weeks to ready the team for their first 2027 AFCON qualifying match against Guinea.
After a 24-day delay following the South African Football Association's initial approval, Pitso Mosimane was confirmed as the senior national team coach on Tuesday. Association president Danny Jordaan had earlier noted the need to resolve outstanding matters. Mosimane succeeds Belgian Hugo Broos, who stepped down after guiding the squad to the World Cup knockout stage.
He now has roughly three weeks to prepare Bafana Bafana for their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at home against Guinea, a team that missed the 2025 tournament but boasts Borussia Dortmund forward Serhou Guirassy. Mosimane's earlier tenure with South Africa from 2010 to 2012 ended in disappointment after missing AFCON qualification and a World Cup qualifier setback. At club level, he won the CAF Champions League once with Mamelodi Sundowns and twice with Al Ahly, plus three CAF Super Cups, establishing him as the most successful Black coach in CAF club history.
His experience also includes spells in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran. The agreement extends to the 2030 World Cup cycle.
Why it matters
Mosimane's appointment shapes South Africa's preparation for the crucial AFCON qualifying campaign.
