Planet Money and Exploding Kittens debut economics-themed board game Sell Me A Sasquatch
Planet Money teamed with Exploding Kittens to release Sell Me A Sasquatch, a board game that embeds concepts like asymmetric information and adverse selection.
Planet Money partnered with Exploding Kittens to launch Sell Me A Sasquatch, a family-friendly board game that teaches economic principles through whimsical creature trading. Drawing inspiration from George Akerlof’s 1970 "Market for Lemons" paper, the game forces participants to negotiate with incomplete information, illustrating asymmetric information and adverse selection. Hidden throughout are nods to ideas such as the Laffer Curve, Veblen goods, and labor-strike imagery, many suggested by more than 1,600 listeners.
Cards feature cryptids like a laughing hyena representing the Laffer Curve and a peacock embodying conspicuous consumption. The product is now on shelves and will be highlighted in an upcoming Planet Money episode about how stores choose their inventory.
Why it matters
It demonstrates how complex economic theories can be conveyed through a fun, accessible board game.
