Platina reshapes portfolio to focus on Western Australian gold projects
Platina Resources has sold its scandium project to Rio Tinto, using the proceeds to fund a concentrated push into gold exploration in Western Australia.
Platina Resources completed a sale of its namesake scandium project to Rio Tinto, receiving cash that now underpins a shift toward gold exploration in Western Australia. The firm has assembled a portfolio around the Laverton gold district, including Sunrise Bore, Mt McKenna and Mt Morgans South, each acquired through recent purchases. Initial reverse-circulation drilling at Sunrise Bore produced a 29-metre intercept with grades above 3 g/t, and historic data suggest deeper potential.
At Mt McKenna, air-core work has identified several high-grade zones, prompting plans for deeper drilling, while Mt Morgans South adds a sizeable tenement near existing large-scale mines. Non-core assets such as Xanadu, Challa and Brimstone have been sold or farmed out, and a state-funded drilling program will support further work at Mt McKenna. Dr. Paul Polito, appointed managing director in July, now leads the effort to turn these assets into a discovery-scale gold operation.
Why it matters
The move positions Platina to capitalize on Western Australia's rich gold resources with a stronger balance sheet.
