PM Magyar claims Hungarian priorities won at EU summit amid fierce energy disputes
Prime Minister Magyar told ATV that Hungary secured its interests at the Brussels summit, highlighting intense clashes over EU energy policy and the carbon tax.
At the EU leaders' meeting in Brussels, Prime Minister Magyar asserted that Hungary achieved victories on all key issues, describing the atmosphere as filled with veto threats, shouting, alliances and major disputes. He identified the EU's energy policy, especially the carbon tax, as the most contentious topic, arguing that the existing framework imposes growing burdens on both the European economy and citizens. Together with the Visegrád group, Greece and Italy, Hungary labeled the policy unacceptable, leading the bloc to reconsider its social and economic effects.
Magyar also mentioned his conversation with Zelenszkij, saying both sides are pleased with the Ukraine deal and that Carpathian Hungarians share this view. He doubted the Ukrainian president could travel to Budapest for a planned 70th-anniversary event, noting that all other heads of state were invited except Putyin. Finally, he warned Brussels that Hungary will only support the EU's seven-year budget in December if it receives all entitled development funds and no cuts to the common agricultural policy or cohesion allocations.
