PM Surya Ghar hits 17.5 GW rooftop capacity as monthly additions slow
The PM Surya Ghar scheme reached 17.561 GW of residential rooftop solar in September, while new installations fell for a second month.
JMK Research reports that the PM Surya Ghar initiative crossed the 17.5 GW threshold in September, covering 59,47,035 households nationwide. New rooftop solar installations totaled 1,375 MW, marking a second consecutive month of decline after August's 1,407.32 MW. The slowdown represents a 2.3% drop from August but remains above June's 960.88 MW level.
Uttar Pradesh led the month with 234.46 MW, followed by Maharashtra (208.04 MW) and Gujarat (165.6 MW), together accounting for roughly 44% of the total. The scheme aims for 30 GW by March 2027, leaving a gap of 12.439 GW that would require about 2.07 GW per month to close. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is consulting industry stakeholders on the next phase, including possible battery storage integration and rural expansion.
Why it matters
India's rooftop solar rollout is crucial for meeting renewable energy goals and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
How the sides frame it
MODERATE AGREEMENTLeft-leaning coverage stresses the structural and financial obstacles to expanding rooftop solar in high-rise buildings, while right-leaning coverage emphasizes the overall capacity milestone, the recent slowdown in monthly installations, and the gap to the 30 GW target.
LEFT
Highlights persistent hurdles and the need for financing solutions to scale shared rooftop solar in high-rise societies
RIGHT
Focuses on the quantitative progress, recent slowdown, and future targets of the PM Surya Ghar programme
The left emphasises
- structural hurdles for high-rise societies
- financial and technical barriers such as lack of official discom meters
- need for bank loan products tailored to societies
The right emphasises
- crossing the 17.5 GW threshold covering 59 million households
- monthly installation slowdown and leading states' contributions
- remaining gap to the 30 GW goal and plans for battery storage
