PNL shifts to opposition yet retains Senate President Mircea Abrudean

After moving to opposition, the PNL confirmed that Mircea Abrudean will stay on as Senate president.

Following the National Liberal Party's decision to become an opposition force while still supporting Luca Niculescu's minority government, Daniel Fenechiu asserted that Senate president Mircea Abrudean will remain in office. He emphasized that the position is chosen by senators, not handed out politically, and that no formal request for Abrudean’s resignation has emerged. Fenechiu praised Abrudean as one of the Senate’s most balanced and dignified leaders, arguing that removing him would be unnecessary.

He also expressed little expectation that the Social Democratic Party would press for Abrudean’s ouster, noting the need for institutional cooperation in a minority-government context. The shift to opposition coincides with a wave of resignations among PNL-backed state secretaries, agency heads and prefects, including Cristina Ancuța Pocora, Liviu Macovei and Adrian Picoiu.

Why it matters

The decision shows how Romanian parties manage power sharing and institutional continuity during a fragile minority government.
