PNL to decide Saturday whether to back Luca Niculescu's mixed PSD-led government

The National Liberal Party will meet on Saturday to vote on granting an investiture vote to the Luca Niculescu government, which includes 12 PSD ministers.

On Saturday, the National Liberal Party's Political Bureau will decide its position on the investiture of the Luca Niculescu government, which comprises twelve ministers from the Social Democratic Party. Ilie Bolojan, PNL leader and prime-minister-designate, told a Digi24 interview that he intends to propose a vote of confidence for the cabinet, though he admitted that some liberal colleagues are reluctant to support it.

He clarified that the vote would only install the government, after which PNL would sit in opposition. Bolojan also said PNL and USR aim to build a modernisation pole that could evolve into an alliance for the 2028 elections. USR's political committee voted unanimously to oppose the investiture, denouncing the PSD-AUR coalition as a toxic majority that would waste public funds and block reforms. The proposed cabinet includes two new delegate minister posts for digitalisation/AI and pre-university education, filled by Bogdan Costinel Dumitru and Gabriel Sorin Ionescu.

Why it matters

The decision will shape Romania's parliamentary balance and influence the upcoming 2028 election landscape.
