PNV leader says Sánchez government overwhelmed by Ceuta influx and hints at Moroccan pressure

In an interview, Aitor Esteban, head of the PNV, described the Sánchez government as "overwhelmed" by the rapid influx of migrants into Ceuta. He argued that the authorities failed to anticipate the depth of the crisis despite declassified documents indicating prior alerts. Esteban suggested that Morocco might be using undisclosed leverage to heighten pressure on Spain, but he admitted he lacks proof.

He emphasized that the lack of coordination and insufficient attention to early warnings contributed to one outlet strain. The leader urged the executive to adopt more humility and self-criticism, noting that the political fallout could lead to an early dissolution of parliament and new elections. He also warned that the Ceuta episode will have lasting social repercussions beyond the immediate political debate.
