Podcast Rankings Show Comedy Leads While Political Shows Surge Ahead of Midterms
Triton Digital’s Q2 2026 U.S. Podcast Ranker reveals comedy remains the top genre, but news and political podcasts posted the biggest quarterly growth as the midterm election approaches.
Triton Digital released its second-quarter U.S. Podcast Ranker, showing comedy as the dominant genre with 44.5% of weekly reach and 57 of the top 200 podcasts, bolstered by late-night shows and stand-up formats. News and political podcasts experienced the sharpest increase, rising 8.4% to capture 25.7% of reach, with shows like Mark Levin, Breaking Points, and The David Pakman Show re-entering the top-50. Legacy news brands such as Meet the Press and one outlet Nightly News also posted gains, reflecting heightened voter interest ahead of the midterms.
The report highlights that smaller, niche podcasts deliver high-value advertising audiences, especially in categories like technology and business. Top sales networks were iHeart Audience Network, Audioboom, and Cumulus Podcast Network, while the most downloaded podcasts included Stuff You Should Know and Pod Save America. Daryl Battaglia of Triton Digital emphasized the medium’s growing role in political campaigning and the value of personality-driven content for advertisers.
