Podemos launches pre-campaign rally, confirms Irene Montero as 2027 candidate

Podemos held a rally in Madrid to kick off its pre-campaign and officially announced Irene Montero as its candidate for the 2027 general election.

Podemos organized a public meeting in Madrid on Friday to mark the beginning of its pre-campaign activities and to confirm Irene Montero as the party’s nominee for the 2027 general election. According to party sources, Montero will head a distinctly left-wing slate but aims to build the broadest possible coalition, leaving room for potential agreements with parties aligned with Sumar. During the event she will present the main axes of her platform, which include measures to make housing more affordable, shorten the workweek, curb the rise in basic-goods prices, promote peace and protect the planet.

The rally also introduced the slogan “peace, home and work” and highlighted five priority areas that Montero plans to champion. Party officials believe the clear proposals could re-energise voters dissatisfied with current economic and social conditions. The move follows earlier indications that Montero, the party’s number two, would be the lead candidate.

Why it matters

The announcement defines Podemos' strategy and candidate for the upcoming national election, shaping the left-wing political landscape.
