Podemos limits left-wing unity talks to IU deals outside Madrid and Catalonia

Podemos leader Ione Belarra announced the party will only seek accords with Izquierda Unida in territories other than Madrid and Catalonia, effectively ruling out a wider left-wing coalition with Frente Amplio.

In a recent interview, Ione Belarra said Podemos will no longer pursue a unified left front with Frente Amplio in Madrid and Catalonia, limiting future pacts to Izquierda Unida in other regions. She noted that offers have already been extended to IU in places such as Cantabria, Andalucía and Murcia, and that IU bears responsibility for finalising those agreements. Belarra also attacked Frente Amplio for changing its name from Sumar and for aligning with the PSOE, claiming it does not represent voters' needs.

Ada Colau criticized the coalition for lacking a primary process for its main pact, a requirement she says was imposed on the Frente Amplio deal. Meanwhile, regional talks are progressing: a three-way agreement between Compromís, IU and Podemos in the Comunitat Valenciana is near conclusion, while similar negotiations are underway in the Balearic Islands, Aragón and the Canary Islands. Despite these advances, Podemos and Frente Amplio remain at odds over a nationwide joint list.

Why it matters

The decision shapes the left's ability to present a unified electoral front across Spain's key regions.
