Pokémon Champions delivers streamlined competitive battling with free-to-play twists

The new free-to-play title Pokémon Champions focuses solely on online PvP, simplifying team building and offering optional microtransactions.

Pokémon Champions is a standalone competitive arena that eschews the series' usual exploration in favor of online battles on Switch and mobile platforms. Players create squads by recruiting from a ranch or transferring Pokémon through Pokémon Home, then distribute a fixed pool of stat points to customize each creature at level 50. The title offers two battle formats—3v3 singles and 4v4 doubles—mirroring official VGC rules, while omitting larger team modes.

Monetization consists of a $7 starter pack, a $5 monthly membership and a $10 battle pass, which grant extra storage, team slots and cosmetic rewards. Critics note the convenience of the point-based system but mention reduced depth in skill expression and limited battle-log tools. Despite these quirks, the game has already hosted major tournaments, with the upcoming World Championship set to crown its next champion.

Why it matters

Pokémon Champions lowers the entry barrier for competitive play, reshaping how millions of fans engage with the franchise.
