Poland advances talks on new US military financing package for equipment

Poland is close to finalising a new financing arrangement with the United States under the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) programme. The deal, described by Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz as an "American SAFE", would provide preferential, government-guaranteed credit for the purchase of US-made defence equipment. This follows a series of multi-billion contracts for systems such as Patriot air-defence, F-35 fighter jets and HIMARS rocket launchers.

The new financing is intended to spread the cost of Poland's extensive armed forces modernisation over time. For Washington, the FMF programme also serves to deepen military cooperation with a key ally and boost US defence exports. If concluded soon, the agreement could be signed within the week.
