Poland challenges EU Mercosur trade deal, citing procedural breach and farm sector risks
Poland has taken the EU Court of Justice to void the Council's decision approving the interim EU-Mercosur trade pact, arguing procedural flaws.
Poland filed a case before the EU Court of Justice demanding the cancellation of the European Council's decision that allowed the temporary EU-Mercosur trade arrangement to take effect. The Polish authorities argue that separating the agreement into two separate documents enabled the EU to bypass the unanimity requirement for ratification. The Mercosur bloc, made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, seeks to reduce trade barriers, including tariff cuts, between its members and the EU.
The provisional pact began to be applied after the necessary internal procedures were completed. Since its inception, the deal has faced strong opposition in Poland, especially from the farming sector, which warns that increased imports of South American agricultural products could damage European producers.
