Poland launches free low-dose lung CT scans for high-risk smokers

The National Health Fund will offer complimentary low-dose chest CT scans to eligible current and former smokers starting in October.

Poland's National Health Fund has introduced a preventive initiative that will cover low-dose computed tomography of the chest at no cost for qualifying individuals. The scheme focuses on current and former smokers aged 55 to 74 who have accumulated at least 20 pack-years, and also includes people aged 50 to 74 with extra risk factors like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a family history of lung cancer, or exposure to asbestos.

Applicants do not need a doctor's referral and must arrange the exam with a clinic that has a contract with the Fund. The program starts enrolling patients in the latter half of October, with plans to make the service available across all provinces. Results will be reviewed by specialists who will discuss findings and next steps with patients.

Why it matters

Early detection of lung cancer can dramatically improve treatment success rates for high-risk populations.
