Poland's central bank boosts gold holdings to nearly 648 tonnes
The National Bank of Poland reported that its gold reserves rose to almost 648 tonnes by the end of August, adding several tonnes in the month.
Data released by the National Bank of Poland show that its gold reserves grew to nearly 648 tonnes at the close of August, an increase of several tonnes compared with July's roughly 640 tonnes. The World Gold Council had previously identified Poland as the top purchaser of gold among central banks since the start of 2026. August also saw a notable surge in world gold prices, which finished the month at $4,563 per ounce, one of the strongest monthly performances in decades.
The NBP continues to buy gold systematically, with a stated goal of amassing 700 tonnes, meaning about 50 tonnes remain to be purchased. Over the past months, the bank's holdings have risen from around 614 tonnes in May to one outlet level, reflecting a steady accumulation strategy aimed at diversifying official reserves.
Why it matters
Poland's expanding gold reserves strengthen its financial safety net and signal confidence in gold as a reserve asset.
