Poland's defence ministry drafts law to boost wartime readiness and command coordination

The Ministry of Defence is drafting a new defence-readiness act aimed at streamlining command structures and speeding troop deployments before a formal state of war is declared.

Poland's Ministry of Defence confirmed that a draft defence-readiness law is under internal review, aiming to replace a patchwork of regulations issued since the 2022 defence act. The legislation intends to strengthen the country's defensive capabilities, enhance coordination between the military and internal security agencies, and adapt legal frameworks to contemporary hybrid, cyber and disinformation challenges. It would allow earlier relocation of national and allied troops, link the national defence response plan with NATO's Response System, and improve infrastructure preparedness.

Additional provisions expand the number of entities participating in permanent duty rosters, set new limits on civil staff mobility, and update training, courses and exercises. While the bill's passage schedule is uncertain, the National Security Bureau has expressed support for the initiative.

Why it matters

The law could reshape Poland's defence posture and its ability to respond swiftly to emerging security threats.
