In Konotopie, a small Polish village of under 150 inhabitants, a 55.6-meter Virgin Mary statue was officially opened on Saturday. The monument, which includes a 15-meter crown-shaped base, is now considered the tallest of its kind in Europe, outstripping the Christ the King statue in Swiebodzin. Funding came from Roman Karkosik, a self-made millionaire, and his wife Grażyna, who said the work expresses gratitude to God following Roman's illness.
The Karkosiks live nearby in a small palace and have long supported Catholic initiatives. Authorities anticipate the site will serve both as a pilgrimage destination and a boost to regional tourism, featuring a viewing platform inside the pedestal.
