Police arrest 15 after stone-throwing erupts at Ujjain mosque demolition

A road-expansion effort in Ujjain required the removal of less than 10% of the Shahi Masjid, a move approved by the mosque committee. When demolition began, a crowd of protesters threw stones at police, causing injuries that were treated on site. Law enforcement used tear-gas shells and a cane charge to disperse the demonstrators and subsequently arrested 15 people, including state AIMIM chief Mohsin Ali Khan, for disturbing the peace.

Later that afternoon, a sizable group of Muslim women staged a sit-in at the demolition site, calling for an immediate stop to the work. Ujjain collector Roshan Kumar emphasized that only a small portion of the mosque was affected and noted that fourteen religious structures are involved in the project, with twelve already removed after cooperation from religious leaders. The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh high court dismissed a petition challenging the demolition, confirming that the Municipal Corporation can proceed according to the Ujjain Development Plan and legal procedures.
