Police arrest knife-wielding suspect after multiple injuries in Guangzhou university district
Guangzhou police detained a 35-year-old man suspected of stabbing several pedestrians near a hot-pot restaurant in the city’s university town, with victims taken to hospital but none in critical condition.
At approximately 5.20 pm, emergency services in Guangzhou’s Panyu district received alerts about multiple knife attacks outside a hot-pot restaurant on Xiaoguwei Island, an area that hosts several major universities. Police from the Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau’s Panyu branch responded promptly, detaining a 35-year-old male suspect identified only by the surname Li. The injured pedestrians were transported to nearby hospitals, where they were reported to be out of life-threatening danger after treatment.
Social media posts earlier in the day showed graphic video of a masked man stabbing a woman’s face inside the Gogo Xintiandi mall, as well as footage of an older woman covered in blood. Some posts suggested more than one attacker, but this has not been confirmed. Police footage later showed officers entering the shopping centre and apprehending the suspect. The case remains under investigation.
