Police charge protesters blocking Ayuso’s exit during education strike, seal palace access

Police intervened as demonstrators blocked Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s departure from a longevity forum, prompting the closure of palace entrances.

A protest by teachers and other collectives began in front of the Madrid Education, Science and Universities Ministry, where demonstrators called for higher quality public education and negotiations with the regional cabinet. The march continued to the Palacio de Santoña, the venue of a longevity forum attended by regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and the protesters blocked her departure, shouting slogans such as "more resources, less speeches" and referencing a disputed regional property purchase.

Police National forces deployed at the palace doors, used charging tactics and closed all access routes to protect Ayuso, who eventually left the building. The demonstrators also used whistles, pots and flares, demanding "more desks and fewer predatory funds" while chanting "we are teachers, not criminals." Earlier that morning, Education Minister Mercedes Zarzalejo aborted a scheduled visit to the Antonio Palacios secondary school in Vallecas after police advised of potential public order problems. Authorities reported that the protest disrupted traffic on Calle Alcalá around midday.
