Police chase ends in carjacking and stabbing, two children injured in Sydney west

Police attempted a welfare check on a 36-year-old driver in Belmore, but he ignored orders to stop, prompting a pursuit that continued into Auburn before being called off due to his dangerous driving. The driver then entered the M4 Motorway on the wrong side, struck an oncoming car and fled the scene with two children still in the vehicle. A 25-year-old man who intervened was wounded with a stab wound to his hand during a scuffle, after which the driver seized a woman’s car that had stopped to help and placed the children inside it.

He sped westward along the M4, eventually stopping on the Cumberland Highway at Wentworthville, where an off-duty police officer and nearby civilians helped arrest him. He was escorted to a hospital under police guard, while the children, who sustained only minor injuries, were taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital for observation. Police are still gathering statements to reconstruct the incident.
