Police chase of articulated lorry in South Down injures three officers
A late-night pursuit of a blue articulated lorry in South Down resulted in three PSNI officers being injured after their patrol car was rammed.
Police received a call at about 11.25 pm about a blue articulated lorry swerving on Moygannon Road in the Warrenpoint area of South Down. Chief Inspector Will Brown said officers found the vehicle on Derryleckagh Road, Newry, and when signalled to stop it failed to comply, leading to a short pursuit. The lorry, driven at speed on the wrong side of the road, collided with a police patrol car, injuring three officers inside; their injuries are not believed to be serious and the patrol vehicle was heavily damaged.
The lorry then headed toward Rostrevor, where it eventually stopped on Water Street. The 36-year-old driver abandoned the vehicle, ran on foot, and was apprehended after a brief chase. He was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while disqualified, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, and dangerous driving. Police continue to investigate and are seeking witnesses or dash-cam footage.
