Unverified social-media reports of a rape at Lovely Professional University triggered a student protest that blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway on Sunday evening. Police, arriving at about 8 p.m., responded with a lathicharge when demonstrators threw stones, leading to injuries among officers and students. The road blockage created extensive traffic jams, with vehicles queuing for hours.
On campus, windows were shattered, flower pots broken and some objects set on fire. Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora said police had spoken with the students about their grievances and were working to resolve them, while an assessment of property damage is underway and legal steps will follow.
