Police Detain Hundreds Ahead of CJP Protest Demanding Election Commissioner’s Resignation

Authorities in Delhi and other states arrested more than 1,600 people, including CJP leaders and student activists, to stop a planned rally against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

In a pre-emptive sweep, Delhi police arrested CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, co-convenor Saurav Das, leader Ashutosh Ranka and activist Dhruv Rathee, as well as legal team head Ratna Singh and three other lawyers, before the party’s scheduled rally at Jantar Mantar. More than 1,600 people, including over 400 SFI members marching toward the site and several lawyers marching from the Supreme Court, were detained across the capital and at railway stations in Madhya Pradesh, Pune and Bhopal.

The demonstration was organized to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged SIR roll-list flaws, but Delhi Police refused permission citing security and procedural concerns. CPI(M) leaders M A Baby, Brinda Karat and others were also held at the protest venue. Tushar Gandhi was arrested in Mumbai for a parallel rally supporting the CJP cause. Party officials condemned the arrests as an attempt to suppress dissent and vowed to continue the movement.

The mass detentions highlight tensions between protest rights and preventive policing in India’s capital.
