Police Detain Suspect After Infant Found Abandoned in Westchester Supermarket Bathroom

Early Sunday, officers responding to a report of an abandoned baby discovered a newborn in the restroom of a ShopRite located in the City Center shopping complex in Westchester County. The infant was quickly transported to White Plains Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. White Plains Department of Public Safety, together with Westchester County police, K9 teams, and Harrison Police Department officers, conducted a search that led to the identification and detention of a suspect.

The department is working closely with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office to determine potential charges, while Child Protective Services has taken responsibility for the child's care. Police noted the circumstances as “heart-wrenching” and thanked the store and community members for their assistance. The case falls under New York’s Safe Haven law, which outlines legal consequences for abandoning infants under one month old.
