Police driver placed under assisted witness status after collision sparks unrest

A police officer operating a patrol car collided with a motorbike ridden by a teenager, causing serious leg injuries to the rider who was hospitalized. After being held in police custody, the officer was presented to a judge, who chose not to issue a formal indictment and instead assigned him the status of assisted witness. This legal position allows the suspect to have a lawyer, access case files, and remain silent, while precluding pre-trial detention or electronic monitoring.

The collision occurred during a police operation aimed at curbing urban rodeos and set off a night of unrest in Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, during which ten police officers were injured and about twenty vehicles were set ablaze. The assisted witness status can be upgraded to an indictment if further evidence emerges.
