Police enforce eviction of 87‑year‑old Madrid resident after court order

Maricarmen, an 87‑year‑old woman who has lived in the same flat in Madrid’s Retiro district since 1956, was evicted on Wednesday morning following a Supreme Court ruling that ended the subrogation right protecting her tenancy. The building’s new owner, Urbagestión Desarrollo e Inversión SL, sought to terminate the long‑standing lease and a judicial commission carried out the eviction despite protests by activists and neighbours outside the building.

Maricarmen, who uses a wheelchair, had her belongings removed by police and volunteers. Health minister Mónica García, also leader of Más Madrid, urged the government to place the Real Decreto Ley de Vivienda on the agenda of the upcoming cabinet meeting, warning that cases like Maricarmen’s should not be repeated.
