Police evacuate Newcastle University campus after suspicious item discovered

A suspicious object found at a Newcastle University building prompted a large police response and the evacuation of nearby staff and students.

Police received a report of a suspicious item at a Newcastle University facility on Kings Walk in the city centre at 2.10 pm on Friday. Responding officers set up a security perimeter and closed nearby thoroughfares such as Queen Victoria Road, Brewery Lane, King’s Road and St Thomas’ Street. Emergency services were called to the scene, and university personnel and students were promptly evacuated from the surrounding structures.
