Police fatally shoot armed suspect on Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Police officers shot and killed a gun-wielding man near 21st Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway after he pointed a weapon at them.
Police were dispatched to the 21st Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway intersection after bystanders reported an armed man discharging a firearm. Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said officers used a bullhorn to try to de-escalate, but the suspect continued to brandish and fire his weapon, pointing it at the officers. A Philadelphia police officer and a SEPTA officer each fired a single shot, hitting the suspect, who was then taken to Jefferson University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:36 a.m. The man's identity and exact age were not released, though he appeared to be in his 50s. The Parkway has been closed to traffic as the investigation proceeds, and a firearm was recovered under a bench at the scene. Nearby witnesses, including a woman with a child at the Franklin Institute, were instructed to shelter in place.
