Police fatally shoot driver after car crashes into tree in Rugby, NSW

A man who crashed his car into a tree near Rugby was shot dead by police after allegedly pointing a rifle at officers.

Around 3 p.m. on Sunday, police were dispatched to Corringle Lane after a car was reported to have struck a tree near the small town of Rugby, NSW. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered a Chrysler station wagon lodged in the tree and an unconscious driver in the front seat. According to police media, when officers moved to render assistance, the driver allegedly aimed a rifle at them, leading the officers to open fire.

The shooter, thought to be about 45 years old, was administered CPR but was pronounced dead at the location. A crime scene has been secured, and a critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will investigate. The investigation will undergo one outlet's review by the Professional Standards Command and be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission, which aims to ensure a thorough and objective inquiry.
