Police fatally shoot knife-wielding suspect on busy Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica

A man armed with a large kitchen knife charged police near the Santa Monica Pier and was shot dead by officers.

Around midday on a Saturday, Santa Monica Police responded to a reported domestic-violence situation in the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue, close to the famous pier. During witness interviews, a man in his late 40s suddenly rushed the officers brandishing a large kitchen-style knife. Lieutenant Lewis Gilmour confirmed the suspect had no connection to the domestic-violence case.

One officer discharged his weapon, hitting the attacker, who later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. Emergency crews attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful. No police officers were harmed, and investigators will eventually make the body-camera video public while preserving the crime scene for evidence.
