Police fire on knife-wielding suspect in Helsinki apartment building

Police in Helsinki responded to a threat call at a Hämeentie residential tower on Sunday evening. Initial phone contact revealed the target individual was uncooperative and hostile toward police. Simultaneously, another report described a man seen with a crossbow in the building's stairwell.

Officers arrived in several units and observed a man holding a knife in the stairwell. When the suspect opened the stairwell's outer door and moved toward the officers, he refused to obey commands, prompting officers to use their firearms. Witnesses heard two gunshots near the K-market building adjacent to the site.

After the shooting, the suspect continued to resist, requiring the use of a taser before he could be subdued and taken to a medical facility. The roughly 50-year-old suspect is now detained, receiving hospital care, and the incident is being examined for violent resistance, illegal weapon possession, and drug-related offenses by the national prosecutor's office police crime unit.
