Police fire warning shots after suspect attacks officer and dives into sea
During a chase in Kampung Titingan, a suspect assaulted a police officer with a steel rod, tried to drown him and was stopped after officers fired warning shots.
The Tawau police chief, Rosdi Mat Jusoh, said officers were conducting an operation in Kampung Titingan to locate three men suspected of an armed robbery and attempted rape of an 18-year-old girl earlier that day. Around 4 p.m., one of the suspects attacked a policeman with a steel rod and then plunged into the sea, trying to drown the officer while being pursued. The police fired warning shots, which forced the suspect to surrender, and he was subsequently arrested.
Two police officers were injured in the confrontation. The apprehended suspect, a foreign national in his 30s, had no valid identification documents and tested positive for drugs. A viral video of the incident only shows the warning shots, and officials say no live fire occurred. Authorities are still searching for the other two suspects, and the case is being investigated for armed gang robbery and the use of criminal force to outrage a person's modesty.
