Police identify 19 victims in AI-generated child sexual abuse case
A six-month probe by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary led to nearly 60 charges against a 17-year-old after 19 youths were found to have been exploited using AI-altered images.
In January, a group of adolescents filed a complaint with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, alleging that ordinary photographs of them had been digitally manipulated with artificial intelligence to produce explicit images. Over the following six months, investigators, including members of the child abuse and sexual assault unit and computer-forensics specialists, examined devices and online platforms to trace the source of the AI-generated material.
On July 29, they filed nearly 60 criminal charges against a 17-year-old from St. John's, encompassing 19 counts each of making, possessing and distributing child sexual abuse material, plus one count of accessing such material. The 19 victims identified so far remain unnamed for privacy reasons. Police emphasized the novelty of the case, noting it may be the first involving AI-created sexual exploitation content, and called for greater awareness of digital safety and the criminal code’s provisions.
