Police impose extra powers ahead of anti-migration rallies in Southampton and Dover
Southampton police have activated a dispersal order and banned face coverings for upcoming anti-migration and anti-racism demonstrations, while Kent Police are bolstering resources for a related protest in Dover.
Ahead of Saturday's anti-migration and anti-racism rallies, Southampton police have invoked a dispersal order and a ban on face coverings to keep the events under control. The two rival factions - South Coast Patriots and Southampton Stand Up To Racism - will follow designated routes with neutral zones set up to keep them apart. Superintendent Alex Charge explained that the restrictions are intended to deter offences, safeguard local residents and ensure participants can exercise their democratic rights lawfully.
Southampton Itchen MP Darren Paffey cautioned individuals who might try to stir fear, division, or disorder to avoid the city. Meanwhile, in Dover, Kent Police have readied a strong response, deploying extra officers to manage the planned demonstrations and any counter-protests. Both forces aim to maintain public order while respecting the right to protest.
