Police K-9 burned as suspect ignites himself and adult store in San Diego standoff
A suspect set fire to a police dog and an adult bookstore during a violent confrontation in San Diego, prompting officers to fire their weapons.
San Diego officers answered a call about a person trying to break into vehicles on 30th Street in the North Park neighborhood. During a foot chase the suspect fled into a nearby adult bookstore, brandishing a container of flammable liquid and producing a large flame that was used on the police K-9, Ryder. Three officers also suffered burns of unknown origin.
Police initially deployed bean-bag rounds, but the suspect then set himself on fire while moving toward officers, leading an officer to fire multiple shots. Witnesses described the suspect’s body engulfed in flames before he was removed and taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Ryder received facial burn treatment and is expected to fully recover, and the injured officers received emergency medical care. The incident is under investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
