Police launch manhunt for convicted murderer who skipped day-release return
Gary Anderson, a 29-year-old convicted killer, failed to report back to HMP Maghaberry after a day-release and is now being sought by police.
A manhunt has been initiated after Gary Anderson, 29, did not return to HMP Maghaberry following a day-release granted on Monday. Anderson was convicted in 2023 of killing Karol Kelly, a father of five, who was stabbed on Grafton Street in Londonderry in early March 2018. Both Anderson and his brother, Sean Anderson, were found guilty of the murder.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has appealed directly to Anderson to surrender and warned citizens not to confront him, urging anyone with leads to call 101 and quote reference 555 of 14/09/26. He is believed to be on the run, standing at roughly 5 ft 11 in, of slim build, with brown hair.
Why it matters
The escape raises public safety concerns and highlights challenges in managing day-release programs for violent offenders.
