Police launch probe into alleged misconduct over M6 highway concession
Budapest police have opened a criminal investigation into suspected illicit handling of the M6 motorway concession after a complaint was filed.
Police in Budapest announced a criminal investigation into the management of the M6 motorway after accusations of illicit handling. The 59-kilometre stretch of the M6 (and M8) was granted to MKIF Zrt., a company tied to Lőrinc Mészáros and László Szijj, without a competitive bidding process, a decision attributed to then-transport minister János Lázár. In July, the G7 reported the award, and later transport minister Dávid Vitézy claimed that a lower-cost operator could have been selected.
The Ministry of Transport and Investment filed a complaint, leading to a heated exchange with the ruling party. The Central Prosecutor’s Office said a private individual’s complaint triggered the investigation, which was transferred to the Budapest Police. The government also announced plans to review and possibly terminate the concession, with Prime Minister Magyar Péter and Vitézy stating the contracts are ending, prompting MKIF to consider legal action.
