Police Minister says matter remains under investigation as Labour denies any probe of Naidoo

Labour says police have confirmed Rakesh Naidoo is not under investigation, while Police Minister Mark Mitchell maintains the issue is still ongoing.

Labour officials have confirmed to RNZ that police have confirmed Rakesh Naidoo is not currently under investigation, highlighting his dignified conduct while campaigning. Police Minister Mark Mitchell countered that the issue remains an "ongoing matter for police" and refused further comment, invoking section 6(c) of the Official Information Act to withhold details. The controversy stems from criticism by Police Commissioner Richard Chambers and Mitchell over Naidoo's timing in declaring his political intentions.

An internal police review concluded Naidoo followed policy, though it suggested earlier notification would have been prudent. Mitchell previously mentioned "two or three different facets" to the case, saying one had been resolved, and noted prior phone calls with Chambers about a sensitive briefing involving Naidoo. Labour leader Chris Hipkins accused Mitchell of using his ministerial position to make unsubstantiated claims against a rival candidate.

Why it matters
