Police officer dies after marked patrol vehicle crashes in Redfern early morning

In the early hours of the morning, a fully marked police vehicle travelling with emergency lights and sirens collided with a tree on Gibbons Street in Redfern, killing the female constable on board instantly. The crash happened just outside the Redfern Police Station at approximately 1.30 am. The male constable who was driving was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where his condition is described as stable.

Police have established a crime scene and declared a critical incident, prompting the closure of Regent Street north of Lawson Street as well as Wyndham and Gibbons Streets. Bus routes through the area are being diverted and motorists are advised to avoid the vicinity while the investigation continues.
