Police raid Ipoh call centre accused of impersonating friends to scam Japanese victims
Authorities in Ipoh dismantled a call centre that pretended to be victims' friends, arresting seven suspects linked to a fraud scheme targeting Japan.
Police in Ipoh's Taman Merdeka neighbourhood conducted a raid on a call centre that allegedly posed as friends of victims to defraud individuals in Japan. The operation, carried out by the Perak police Criminal Investigation Department's D7 unit together with the Ipoh Commercial Crime Investigation Division, resulted in the arrest of seven men, six of whom are Japanese and one a local resident, aged between 22 and 58. Investigators confiscated 16 mobile phones, a laptop, a Wi-Fi router and a set of house keys, with the total value of the seizure estimated at RM20,000.
The six Japanese suspects were remanded for four days, while the local suspect was held for one day. The case is being pursued under Sections 420 and 120B of the Penal Code for cheating and criminal conspiracy. Police urged property owners to verify tenants' backgrounds to prevent premises from being used for illegal call-centre activities.
