Police recruit killed, corrections officer wounded in Tucson shooting; suspects at large
A Tucson police recruit was fatally shot and his engaged corrections officer partner injured early Wednesday, and authorities are searching for multiple suspects.
Early Wednesday morning, deputies responded to a call at a residence on the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive, about 17 miles southwest of Tucson. They discovered the body of 23-year-old Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez and rushed his 23-year-old engaged partner, a Pima County corrections officer, to a hospital where she remains in stable condition. Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators are looking for several Hispanic male suspects dressed in all-black attire and ski masks, who fled the scene in a gray Acura MDX, possibly missing a piece over the gas cap.
Both the sheriff and Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto described the shooting as a profound loss for the law-enforcement community and asked the public to call 911 with any information. Officials clarified that the attack is not linked to the recent kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie in the Catalina Foothills. The investigation continues as detectives work to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
Why it matters
The killing of a police recruit and injury of a corrections officer highlight safety concerns for law-enforcement families and prompt a community-wide manhunt.
