Police say 15-year-old scooter rider died after colliding with empty freight truck near Varkaus
A 15-year-old boy was killed when his scooter hit the rear of an empty freight truck on Taipaleentie near Varkaus, police said.
According to crime commissioner Markku Kärpänen, the driver of the empty freight truck contacted police and described his view of the crash, insisting he saw no contact between the scooter and the trailer. The truck, which was hauling only a piece of equipment, was traveling on Taipaleentie, a road that leads to Joensuu, when the boy continued straight onto a bridge instead of turning onto Relanderinkatu. A witness behind the truck said the scooter swerved toward the trailer before the fatal collision.
Police consider the case an accident for now, but the driver will be interrogated and the vehicle’s onboard data will be reviewed. The crash occurred Thursday evening near Varkaus town centre, close to the Viitostie junction.
