Police seek public help after two men flee into Otara River
Police in the Ōpōtiki area are asking for information about two men who fled a vehicle stop and jumped into the Otara River.
Duty Inspector Phil Edwards reported that a vehicle ignored a red light in Wainui at about 3.45 am, prompting police to activate road spikes about 10 km from Ōpōtiki shortly after 4 am. The car stopped on Snell Road by the Otara River, where both occupants abandoned the vehicle and jumped into the water. A search and rescue operation was launched, drawing assistance from the Harbourmaster, Coastguard Ōpōtiki and a rescue helicopter, but the two men remain missing.
Police Search and Rescue staff continue the effort and have appealed to the public for any information, including reports of suspicious activity in the area. Tips can be submitted via 111 or 105, referencing job number P067829874.
