Police shoot suspect dead after hostage standoff at Fremont assisted-living center
A July 24 standoff at an Aegis Living facility in Fremont ended when officers fired on 62-year-old Edward Francis Oliver, who died after being wounded. Both hostages escaped unharmed.
Around 3:30 p.m. on July 24, Fremont police were dispatched to an Aegis Living assisted-living home after a 62-year-old man barricaded himself with two hostages. Officers can be heard pleading with Edward Francis Oliver to surrender, warning him that he would be shot if he did not comply. When Oliver pointed the device, later confirmed as an airsoft gun, at a hostage and then at responding officers, they opened fire, delivering multiple rounds.
Oliver was transported to a nearby hospital and later died, while the two hostages were freed and suffered no injuries. A family member of the hostages provided critical information during the incident, and the motive appears linked to a family dispute, though details remain unclear. The shooting is under investigation.
